Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-1898), professore di matematica a Oxford, scrittore, fotografo e logico, è noto in tutto il mondo con il nome di Lewis Carroll e come autore di Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (“Alice nel paese delle meraviglie”) e del suo seguito Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There (“Attraverso lo specchio”)
Dodgson rivelò sin da giovanissimo le sue notevoli capacità matematiche, ma anche la sua passione per la scrittura creativa, che si manifestò, al principio, attraverso la produzione di poesie e racconti pubblicati da riviste. Nel ‘61 prese i voti e divenne sacerdote. Si appassionò presto anche alla fotografia, ed utilizzò spesso modelle giovanissime. Una di queste, Alice Liddell, gli ispirò l'eroina del suo romanzo più famoso.
Le avventure di Alice nel paese delle meraviglie fu pubblicato per la prima volta il 4 luglio 1865. Il libro narra delle fantastiche avventure della piccola Alice che, seguendo un coniglio bianco, si inoltra in un mondo abitato dalle creature più bizzarre: un cappellaio matto, un gatto in grado di rendersi invisibile, un bruco che fuma il narghilé. I personaggi del mondo incantato evocato da Carroll hanno da subito affascinato bambini e adulti, perché non obbediscono alle leggi della ragione e della società civile, ma solo a quelle del sogno e della fantasia; ma il romanzo possiede anche un senso più profondo, dal momento che raccoglie allusioni a personaggi, poemetti, proverbi e avvenimenti propri dell'epoca in cui fu scritto, e il suo autore gioca con regole logiche, linguistiche, fisiche e matematiche. La fortuna dell’opera dalla sua pubblicazione ad oggi è stata immensa. Tradotto in moltissime lingue, infatti, il romanzo ha dato vita a innumerevoli adattamenti letterari, teatrali e cinematografici, ed ha ispirato canzoni e poemetti ma anche fumetti, cartoni animati e videogiochi.

L’edizione qui presentata è impreziosita dalle illustrazioni originali realizzate da John Tenniel per la prima edizione inglese del romanzo.
