Effi Briest ist ein Roman von Theodor Fontane, der erstmals 1894–1895 in der Deutschen Rundschau und daraufhin 1895 in Buchform erschienen ist. Als Erscheinungsjahr wurde auf dem Titelblatt 1896 angegeben. Der Gesellschaftsroman wird dem poetischen Realismus zugeordnet und spielt vor dem Hintergrund des durch strenge Normen festgelegten Lebens im Kaiserreich unter Reichskanzler Otto von Bismarck.


Der Roman behandelt das Leben der Elfriede von Briest, zumeist Effi genannt, einer jungen Frau mit kindlichem Wesen, die an den gesellschaftlichen Konventionen im Preußen des späten 19. Jahrhunderts zerbricht, weil ihr Mann, Geert Freiherr von Innstetten, sie sechs Jahre nach ihrer Affäre mit Major von Crampas verstößt und zur Wiederherstellung seiner Ehre ihren ehemaligen Liebhaber im Duell erschießt. Auch von ihren Eltern wird Effi zunächst verstoßen.
Der 38-jährige Baron von Innstetten, ein früherer Verehrer von Effis Mutter, hält zu Beginn des Romans um die Hand des damals 17-jährigen Mädchens an und zieht mit Effi nach der Heirat und anschließender Hochzeitsreise durch Italien nach Kessin in Hinterpommern (der literarische Ort ist nicht mit dem tatsächlichen Kessin identisch. Fontane orientierte sich auch an Swinemünde). Effi wird dort nie richtig glücklich und leidet unter ihrer Angst vor einem angeblichen Spuk im geräumigen landrätlichen Haus: Sie ist davon überzeugt, dass in manchen Nächten ein Chinese erscheine, der einst in Kessin gelebt und ein sonderbares Ende gefunden haben soll. In dieser Angst wird Effi bestärkt von Johanna, der von Innstetten ausgesuchten Haushälterin.
