Bethany and her friend Katrice have arrived in the city for their first term at the Music Academy. It’s an exciting new life. There are so many people to meet — including their good-looking housemate, Dion — and so much to discover and do. Even the winter weather and the seemingly ever-present fog can’t dampen their spirits.

But all that changes with the discovery of a pile of music manuscripts abandoned in the attic of their student lodging-house. The pieces were clearly written by two different composers, and they’re in stark contrast: one style is beautiful and melodic, the other is dark and malevolent. The dark music repels Bethany—but Katrice becomes obsessed with it. She plays it for hours every night, driven by a terrible, hectic energy. It’s as if the music has an evil, controlling power, and Bethany is convinced that before long it will drain Katrice’s life force and she will die. The spell must be broken, and the only person who knows its secret is the anonymous composer. Who — and where — is he? Bethany needs to look for him. But that could be a deadly mistake.
