Choraku-ji was founded in 1221 by Tokugawa Yoshisue, the ancestor of Nitta family and the son of Nitta Yoshishige.
Five Mountains and Ten Monasteries System was established in the Muromachi Period, where Choraku-ji became 7th in rank.
Tokugawa Ieyasu was honored the land of Kanto in 1590, as a reward for subjugating the Odawara Hojyo Family.
Tenkai, a priest from Rinno-ji of Nikko mountain, was appointed the priest for Choraku-ji, in order to reestablish the temple founded by the ancestors of Tokugawa.
When the wood-built Tosho-gu's Okusha-houtou was reconstructed to stone-built, the original wood-built Okusha-houto was moved to Serata region.
Images from page 16 onward are from the mural of "Hokke-Sesso-Zu", expressing the Lotus Sutra. The mural is thought to be created by Kimura Ryotaku in the early Tokugawa Shogunate.
