《三言二拍》指的是中國明朝末年出版的五本古典白話小說集，書中每篇獨立，故雖出於明末但屬話本小說，並非章回小說。其中三言指的是馮夢龍寫的《喻世明言》、《警世通言》、《醒世恆言》，二拍指的是凌濛初所寫的《初刻拍案驚奇》和《二刻拍案驚奇》。明末抱甕老人從這五部書中選出其中佳作四十篇編成《今古奇觀》，故有三言二拍的合稱。

*三言*
“三言”每集40篇，共120篇。分別刊于天啟元年（1621）前後、天啟四年（1624）、七年（1627）。這些作品有的是輯錄了宋元明以來的舊本，但一般都做了不同程度的修改；也有的是據文言筆記、傳奇小說、戲曲、歷史故事，乃至社會傳聞再創作而成，故“三言”包容了舊本的匯輯和新著的創作，是我國白話短篇小說在說唱藝術的基礎上，經過文人的整理加工到文人進行獨立創作的開始。它“極摹人情世態之歧，備寫悲歡離合之致”（笑花主人《今古奇觀序》），是宋元明三代最重要的一部白話短篇小說的總集。它的出現，標誌著古代白話短篇小說整理和創作高潮的到來。
*二拍*
在“三言”的影響下，淩蒙初編著了《初刻拍案驚奇》（刊於1628年）和《二刻拍案驚奇》（刊於1632年）各40卷，人稱“二拍”。“二拍”與“三言”不同，基本上都是個人創作，“取古今來雜碎事可新聽睹、佐談諧者，演而暢之”（《二刻拍案驚奇小引》）。它已經是一部個人的白話小說創作專集。“卷帙浩繁，觀覽難周”（笑花主人《今古奇觀序》），故從中選取40種成《今古奇觀》。後三百年中，它就成為一部流傳最廣的白話短篇小說的選本。
