A scientist invents a time machine and uses it to advance far into the future where he finds that humans have branched into two subhuman species--one are bestial underground cannibals and the second are the docile herds of humans that they feed upon. The story demonstrates then new theories of adversity being necessary to keep humans morally and culturally progressive.
