3 LET'S SIGN for Special Needs - Colours and Descriptions

When we sign with children who have special needs, our aim is to support the use of speech, develop vocabulary, and to give confidence and encourage communication generally. We choose to use the vocabulary of BSL (British Sign Language) signs to do this, since BSL is widely used and recognised as a community language of the UK.

Other speech supporting sign systems are also available such as Baby Signing for all pre-verbal youngsters and Signalong in the field of special needs.

All of these systems are based on BSL and many signs are the same.

Signing grabs a child's attention and focuses them on the speaker. The sign then gives visual 'speech' so the child sees the world as well as hears it.

From birth all children are immersed in sound and begin to store these sounds ready to produce speech. In a nutshell if it goes in through their eyes they have a better chance of recalling it later.

* Signing to a child attracts their attention, slows down your speech and makes your words visual. Making a word visual enables the child to hold the word in their head for longer and improves their concentration and understanding.

* Encouraging a child to sign enables them to communicate more fully and helps you to understand what they are trying to say.

* Signs help support good communication and language teaching - we can introduce new vocabulary with the aid of signs.

* A child will switch to using a sign if their speech is not understood.

This application is the 3rd in a series of 9 applications covering a hand picked selection of useful signs.

The focus here is on signs for colours and descriptions. The app is designed as a learning aid and visual interactive tool. As you glide your finger across the card deck you simply press anywhere on the card for the card to flip to reveal the appropriate sign.

* As a bonus we have included a free 50 page book beautifully describing how to use the cards.

Our aim is to provide communication tools that are a affordable and accessible to all.
