Cihai - Chinese characters

Cihai is an application conceived to help you learn the most frequent Chinese characters. With up to 3000 characters with their definitions and ranks you will be able to perfect you Chinese character recognition abilities.

The most frequent characters list was computed based on internet contents and are representative of modern Chinese usage. Those 3000 characters will enable you to recognize more than 95% of the non technical written Chinese language. Each characters will show the most frequent words associated with them. Characters and words cand be both saved as favorites for future review.

The application itself use familar flash card learning techniques, specially tailored for learning Chinese words and characters. Myself have been a long time Chinese learner and created as early as 2002 a personnal flashcard set for personnal use with about 4000 Characters. This application is the continuation of my earlier project.

The dictionnary inside Cihai is here to help the learner memorize the words asssociated with the characters you learn. It therefore cannot be used as standalone dictionnary but comes as a handy context tool for learning characters. The embeded dictionnary contains more than 75000 entries from the open source Chinese English dictionarry CC-CCEDICT. please visit them and contribute to increase entries at www.cc-ccedict.org.

In Cihai you will find:

-Characters search options by sylables, by frequency range ,by tones and by level.

-Display of words associated with characters by frequency usage and by numbers of compounds.

-Easy avorite mark up for both words and characters.

-Display favorites by number of compounds either in list view or card view.

-Autoplay feature with adjustable timer and option to display answer right away or after time elapsed.

The search option are non exclusive, which means you can refine your search to the smallest set of characters you are interested in.
