Dreamtime
For 60,000 years Aboriginal tribes have been able to maintain a seperate way of life that centres on the conection of people to land. Each feature of the landscape and all animals and people were created by the Ancestral Beings. Works of art, including paintings were inherited by Aboriginal people. The very act of painting is a commemoration of those Ancestral beings.
Aboriginal paintings of the Central Desert are maps of country. Not topographical maps but mythological, totemic maps. One of the key motifs in Central Desert art is the 'circle and line'.
The line represents Dreaming tracks sometimes covering vast distances and the circle a site where the ancestral beings acted or rested. Desert art then is inextricably bound with religion.
'Circle and line' also represent moietys and kin groups which delineate relationships: who can marry whom and who can speak to whom in avoidance relationships.
The Central Desert art is dynamic and constantly evolving.
Dreamtime is a collection of 64 Central Australian Desert paintings, along with the Dreaming stories as told by the artists.
Images can be added to the Photo library and can be used as Wallpaper on your iPhone.
All of the art comes from the Aboriginal owned, community based Warlukurlangu Art Centre in Alice Springs, Australia.
Contemporary Aboriginal art is a vital part of the world's oldest continuous cultural tradition. It is also one of the most fascinating areas of modern art.
