Using these Flashcards, you can test your knowledge of French and Kreyòl (Haitian Creole) before and during your mission.

If you or someone you know is traveling to Haiti to support the relief effort, effectively communicating in the native language is critical.

Developed in part with support from the Office of the Secretary of Defense to support military and humanitarian missions, the Vocabulary Flashcards are based on terms and phrases needed to provide aid to the people of Haiti.

Options for language learning include English to French; French to English; English to Haitian Kreyòl; and Haitian Kreyòl to English. Each flashcard contains a word or phrase in the first language. The user states the word in the second language. Touch the screen to see the correct answer and hear the pronunciation. Touch the “check mark” if you were correct and the “x” if you were incorrect. Depending on your answer, the cards will continue to shuffle through the deck. There are more than 275 French terms and phrases and more than 80 Haitian Kreyòl terms and phrases. Approximately 100 terms also contain an image or illustration. Once you have answered each term or phrase correctly, you will proceed to the next level.

Complementary apps include a Vocabulary Quiz in 3D showing appropriate cultural gestures, and a Water Game which tests your knowledge of the language.
