Hot Seat for Teachers

Hot Seat for Teachers

       iOS iPhone

Hot Seat: "Shuffle" for your classroom. Hot Seat is a randomization app for your classroom, developed by a teacher. Use Hot Seat to select a student at random during class discussions. Replace your "calling cards" or "equity sticks" with a speedy app that is always in your pocket!

Getting started is easy:
1) Create a group for each class
2) Create a contact for each student
3) Add a photo

How can I use Hot Seat in class?

Ask a question. Give the class wait time (7 seconds). Then tap the screen to choose a card at random. That student is now on the "Hot Seat." Listen to what the student is thinking. If you don't understand what the student is saying, back up and ask a higher level question.
ex:
"I want everyone to think about the data and what conclusions can be drawn." [wait time]
"Ana, what do you think?"
"I don't know."
"Did your team see the temperature increase or decrease?"
"Increase."
"What do you think that tells us about what's going on?"

In this example, you see that "Hot Seat" questioning is not about right or wrong answers, but about learning more about a students' understanding. The teacher should continue with questions until she feels she understands what the student is thinking.

Is there an easy way to import student names directly from a course roster into Hot Seat?

Yes! First, save the list as a text file with comma separated values. (.csv) You can do this with Microsoft Excel, Google Docs, or just about any spreadsheet software. Then, from the desktop computer from which you sync your address book, open the address book and select Import from the File menu. Match the fields in your file with the address book fields, and import the records. Remember, each class of students should be in a different group.

How can I use Hot Seat to learn students' names?

When you get your class list, add your students' names to the address book, either from within the app or from your desktop address book that syncs to your iPhone or iPod touch. Then add photos. You can take a student's picture from within the app, or drag and drop the photos into their contact card on the desktop address book. Now you're ready to practice names. Just cover the student names as you tap the screen and try to recall the name of each student as their photo comes up.

**PLEASE NOTE: Hot Seat is unable to create new Groups and Contacts when your default Contacts are set to an Exchange server. As a workaround, create your contacts outside the app, or use a different default account.**
