The Towers of Hanoi was originally a game played by the gods of Indian mythology. According to legend, when the world was created the gods made three golden pillars and on one of the pillars they stacked 64 different-sized golden disks from biggest to smallest. The gods demanded that their subjects move the pile of disks from one tower to another. The rules were thus: a bigger disk could not be placed on top of a smaller one and the disks must be moved one at a time.
