This 1932 film based on the 1929 semi-autobiographical novel of the same name by Ernest Hemingway. Is set in Europe during world war 1. The plot of the story centres on the tragic romance, of the two lead characters, Gary Cooper and Helen Hayes, who are an American ambulance driver, and a Scottish Red Cross nurse. When he is injured in battle, he ends up on the hospital where Helen works, and they have an affair which ends up in her becoming pregnant. Gary returns to the front line, and Helens letters to him go astray, and it is he tries to find her later in Switzerland.
