Jeb Drummond is driving his heard of sheep across the Ponderosa when the Cartwrights pull up. Ben politely tells him to leave and Jeb asks for permission and offers to pay, Ben still refuses but reluctantly agrees to let him camp for the night.
The next morning Jeb decides he is not leaving and will stand his ground. He tells his young herdsman Billy to fetch two men and keep an eye out for the Cartwrights. Jeb explains that they’re going to take what they want and that given the chance the Cartwrights would have killed them. Billy, not wanting to face Jebs wrath and grateful ever grateful to him (he had been wrongly accused of steeling a horse and had been hanged by a group of men. He would have died had it have not been for Jeb) agrees and the two other men, Collier and Wheeler, head out with their rifles ...
