Speechify

(5/21/2009); Update for existing Speechify users:

This was a difficult decision to make (and will probably make everybody unhappy) but Speechify is no longer a free program. Please read the details below.

Note: If you purchase before the next update (version 1.4), please be aware that you will be limited to 2 premium synthesis before the upgrade.

Program Features:

If you are interested in having a talking iPhone, then this a program that you will definitely be interested in.

This program is the first free (to our knowledge) text-to-speech (TTS) program for the iPhone and iTouch (2nd generation) devices that runs natively on the iPhone/iTouch. All of the speech is generated locally on your device.

Note: If you are using iPhone OS 2.0 or 2.1, you must upgrade to iPhone OS 2.2 or higher. Additionally your iPhone must not be in silent/vibrate mode. If the ringer is off, then the program will not talk.

The Speechify Classic voice (free voice) used in this program is a retro-1980's voice. If you remember using speech synthesizer hardware on a Commodore 64 or TI-99/4a when you were younger, the sound quality is similar.

What's new

The following features have been added:

1) Removal of Advertising (AdMob)
2) Capability of remembering last text used, as well as favorite text quotes.
3) Sample voices that are available in Speechify Pro
4) Improvement of volume for original Speechify voice

Note: Please read the Help tab to understand why the premium voice synthesis is limited in a free program.

Adding more voices was the most requested feature. In order to bring these to you as quickly as possible (and not make you wait several months), we had to partner with another company that charges us per money per synthesis
