Seventeen Moments of Spring

The series is based on a novel by Yulian Semyonov (the pen name of Yulian Lyanders), with the plot driven by attempts of the Soviet spy at thwarting negotiations between Nazi leaders and American intelligence in the spring of 1945.

The novel is based on a true story. The protagonist is Soviet intelligence officer Maxim Maximovich Isaev - Max Otto von Stirlitz. Isaev is a collective image, in which the author embodied all the best features of a Soviet intelligence officer - every fact of Stirlitz’s biography or activity portrayed in the series is a true story of this or that Soviet spy. The names of many of these have been made public.

The Seventeen Moments of Spring novel is a part of Yulian Semenov’s series devoted to Isaev. The series was immensely popular in the Soviet Union and it originated many popular phrases as well as an entire genre of anecdotes, the latter having seemingly taken a life of its own. The show is still frequently aired on Russian television.
