The iRaagam is a must-have app for any carnatic music enthusiast. It provides a ready-to-use and easy reference for about 350 carnatic raagams, The user can listen to the arohanam (ascending) and avarohanam (descending) notes that define each raagam. There is also a link to Wikipedia, if the user wants to explore a raagam in more detail on the internet.
The intuitive user interface lists raagams alphabetically as well as by their melakartha number. When viewing by melakartha number, janya raagams of each melakartha raagam can be shown or hidden using the +/- button. The user also has the ability to show/hide the Janya raagams of all melakartha raagas, using the "+ All/- All" button in the status bar.
The "Lite" (Free) version has a limited number of Janya raagams. Get the regular version for a more complete list of Janya raagams. Future updates of the regular version will include more raagams.
New in V1.2: Ability for users to add Janya Raagams
iRaagam now provides an easy way for users to add (and later modify) Janya raagams themselves.
Adding a new Janya Raagam:
-Go to any melakartha raagam and use the "+" button to add its Janya raagam. (A "piano interface" with only the keys that satisfy the melakartha raagam will be presented.)
-Type in the name of the Janya raagam you want to add in the "Name: ..." field.
-By playing the piano keys, the avarohanam/avarohanam are automatically entered into the second text field. (Alternately, a standard ASCII keyboard is presented when the user taps the text field letting the user manually enter the aarohanam/avarohanam. A single space is required to separate each note of the scale. The validity of the strings entered will be checked and the user will be prompted to correct errors.)
-Use the "Aaro/Avaro" switch to move between entering the aarohanam and the avarohanam.
NOTE: All 3 items - name of Janya raagam, aarohanam and avarohanam - are required before the new raagam can be successfully added. Each of these can be edited later.
Reviewing (optional): The newly added aarohanam/avarohanam can be played back using the "Review" button. Once you are satisfied with it, press the "OK" button.
Saving:Pressing the "Done" button will save the changes for retrieval later.
Once the "Done" operation is successful, the new raagam will be placed correctly into the existing list of raagams
Editing;
To begin with, the "Edit" button in both the "Raaga" and "Mela" tabs are disabled. Once the user has successfully added a new Janya Raagam, it is automatically enabled. When pressed, a list of user added raagams is presented. The user can select the raagam of their choice and can make changes to it. They can also delete a raagam they had previously added. These changes are persisted.
NOTE: Only raagams added by the user will be presented and hence permitted to be edited or deleted. The Raagams provided by the application cannot be edited or deleted.
Visual hints are provided at various places to help in properly adding/modifying Janya Raagams:
-Initially, the "Done", "Review" and "OK" buttons are disabled.
-When the name, aarohanam and avarohanam are changed, the corresponding the texts appear in red color. The "Review" and "OK" button are enabled.
-Once the "OK" button is pressed, it disables itself and the color of the aarohanam/avarohanam text changes to black.
-The user interface provides explicit messages to let the user take the correct action when pressing the different buttons on this screen.
