MIDIKeys - Wireless MIDI Keyboard Controller

MIDIKeys is a WiFi-based wireless MIDI Keyboard Controller for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

The app doesn't produce any sound itself, it is designed for controlling hardware or software VST-style MIDI synthesizers via a WiFi connection to a Windows or Mac OS X based computer.

Multiple iPhone or iPod Touch devices (up to 16) can run the app simultaneously, each sending messages on its own MIDI channel to the hardware or software synthesizer.

The entire range may be transposed up or down up to two octaves in semitone increments using the "Transpose (semitones)" slider on the settings page or shifted a full octave (up to the two octave limit) by touching the 8va -/+ buttons on the main screen.

Both fixed or variable note MIDI Note On event velocity based on touch position within the key are available as options on the settings page.

While playing, you may also optionally send real-time volume, expression, modulation, or wind controller MIDI messages by tilting the iPhone/iPod Touch to the right or left.

Touch anywhere on the background image at the top of the screen to cycle through the available skins. Settings are saved for the next time the app is run.

MIDIKeys requires two pieces of software to do its job. The first is the MIDIKeys app itself, running on your iPhone or iPod Touch.

The other is a small free open-source DSWiFiMIDI server application that you run on your PC or Mac before launching MIDIKeys.

The server application receives the MIDI messages from the app via WiFi, and sends them along to either an external MIDI interface or a loopback MIDI driver to talk to software synthesizers running on the same computer.

For the most reliable and lowest latency performance, I highly recommend that the PC or Mac be on a wired Ethernet network. The computer and the wireless gateway that the iPhone or iPod Touch is connected to must be on the same network.

To get the full benefit from the app, you should be familiar with the use of MIDI control surfaces, hardware and/or software VST synthesizers.

If you have any concern about the compatibility of the app with your own MIDI setup, please try any of the other free WiFi MIDI apps on the store that use DSMIDIWiFi as a WiFi to MIDI bridge before purchasing MIDIKeys.
