Twit Trends shows you the top trends on twitter and lists the Google search result for a trend.

It answers the question: What is happening right now?

You can see what's going on as it happens. You will be able to find background for any trend via google search integration. Google search results show you the news article and other related information.

But don't be surprised if Google cannot explain a particular trend. Twitter is so NOW that Google may not find an explanation.

I found Twitter Trends useful during the #soundrelief concert. I could not go but with Twitter Trends I could follow all the latest updates about bands and opinions.

If you can't be there in person then Twit Trends is the next best thing to use.
