Most apps tell you how to get there, tell you what to see, tell you what to do. But this isn't your usual travel guide.

This one's a wee bit different. While we've laced it with favourite places, at heart it's an Insider/Outsider view of New Zealand, seen through the prism of its leading city, Auckland.

Insider/Outsider? Because we've lived roughly 15 years in NZ, yet weren't born there, we see things through both familiar eyes and fresh eyes. For instance, we understand the significance of the clothesline to Kiwi women better than most Kiwis. We've watched the shift from tea culture to coffee culture and seen the changes it has wrought. Ditto, beer to wine. Ditto, monoculture to dual culture to multi-culture.

We also want to keep you safe and healthy while you're in New Zealand — remember, we're parents and grandparents — so we've provided all manner of safety tips from traffic rules to emergency phone numbers.

And since we write for the reader, we've provided our candid opinions of the good, the bad and the mustn't be missed. (Also, occasionally, the MUST be missed.)
