When it was completed in 1883 the Brooklyn Bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world. A sight enjoyed by the million people who walk the bridge every year. It wedded the cities of New York and Brooklyn during the most corrupt time in the politics of New York. It was hoped that this avenue to expansion of Brooklyn would alleviate the teeming streets of New York. In 1883 no one envisioned a city growing vertically.
