Q: Why are the flight paths curved and not straight lines?
Answer: The shortest path between two points on Earth IS a straight line on the surface of the globe, but once the map is projected onto a flat surface, that line appears curved. That curved line is called the Great Circle route. For more information, see http://www.progonos.com/furuti/MapProj/Dither/CartProp/Geodesic/geodesic.html
