From the picturesque Old Mission and Leelanau peninsulas of the north to the rural Lake Michigan Shore and Pioneer wine trails of the west, Michigan's wine country has plenty to see — and sip. Join the publishers of Michigan By The Bottle, a blog devoted to exploring Michigan wines, as we guide you through the myriad options available to wine lovers living in and traveling to the Mitten State. With profiles on all of Michigan's 70+ commercial wineries, we'll give you a glimpse into their histories, specialties and tasting room atmospheres, along with links to our related videos and podcasts, maps and contact information.
With nearly 15,000 acres of vineyards — 2,000 of which are dedicated to wine grapes — Michigan is the fourth largest grape-growing state and the eighth in wine grape production nationwide, according to the Michigan Grape & Wine Industry Council. The commercial wineries together produce more than 1 million gallons of wine annually, the majority of which comes from Michigan-grown grapes. Shannon and Cortney Casey have published Michigan By The Bottle (www.michiganbythebottle.com) since June 2009, posting original articles, photos and video features on wineries, winemakers and related events; podcasts highlighting Michigan wines; and aggregated links on Michigan wine news from across the web. MBTB also hosts regular Tweet & Taste Michigan events, which unite wine lovers on Twitter for virtual tasting parties. Since the website's launch, the readership has skyrocketed; as of December 2010, MBTB had nearly 1,500 Facebook fans and more than 5,500 Twitter followers.
