The app New York Free WiFi for iPad helps you find a Cafe or Restaurant with a free WiFi hotspot.
The locations of these Cafes and Restaurants are stored on your iPad, so that you can find them even without internet access.
You can list all cafes near your current Geo location, select a neighborhood by name or ZIP code
or search a WiFi spot near a subway station.
