If you're still distressed with a long contact list, why donot try DreamoGroup?
DreamoGroup is based on the iphone's Contacts application. We added a group functiom on the original one. And of course the group which made by DreamoGroup can also be used in the iphone's Contacts application.

Function:
1. Create and manage your contact groups.
2. Add and remove members from group.
* [Uncategorized] : contacts are not in any group.
It is easy to grouping a new contact in here.
* [Current Group] : members in current group.
Remove member from current group in here.
* [Other Groups] : contacts in other group.
The contacts that has be added to other groups can be add to current group in here.
3. View and use the member's information.
4. Send mail by Group.
