VisualSpan
VisualSpan is an easy to use application that estimates the distance to (or height of) a location via the camera in the iPhone. It works over a wide variety of distances from just a few meters (or feet) up to kilometers (or miles) away.
It does not require use of the GPS or an Internet connection and is designed to be used with one hand.
VisualSpan works by taking the height of an object you specify that you wish to measure the distance to. There is usually an object nearby that you will know the height of such as a car, building, or person. To assist with this, a library of standard heights is supplied for easy reference.
Although it only provides estimations, you may be surprised how accurate VisualSpan can be.
The instructions for use are quite simple:
o Point the camera to the location you wish to estimate the distance. You will need a reference object at the location that you can estimate the height of such as a person, building, or car.
o Take a photo.
o Instead of taking a photo, you can call up photos from the iPhone photo album.
o Position the handy reference lines at the top and bottom of the reference object and specify the height. You may enter the estimated height by direct entry. Alternatively, you may click the "Object Height" button to display a selection of standard object heights.
o The distance is then computed and displayed.
Alternatively, if you know the distance, you can use VisualSpan to estimate the height by changing the Object Height until the known distance is displayed.
